As our global society moves forward and continues to expand and grow culturally, technologically, and industrially, there is a rising need for environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and reconnection to nature and reconnecting our communities in order to protect and preserve resources for future generations.

Climate Change and Youth Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Climate change affects mental and emotional wellbeing, and youth are especially affected due to their life stage, their inability to effect important policy changes and decisions affecting their futures, and the fact that they will have to confront the decisions of others in their future. This project consists of both research and advocacy. The research includes a survey for youth to complete to help us measure concerns and needs. The advocacy gives youth a voice and empowers youth to take action for their future.

Visit the project website for more information, to complete the survey or to participate in project activities.

Climate Change Survey

The federal government is working with the provinces and territories to produce a National Climate Strategy. Now is the time for Sault Ste. Marie to have its say and to take action and let us know what issues are important to you, as well as the strategies you feel should be pursued. The CRANE Institute for Sustainability would like to use your answers to have Sault Ste. Marie's concerns and wishes to be heard and included in the formation of the federal government's new climate strategy. Click on the link below to start the survey!

Basic Income Working Group

Income inequality is a growing issue that occurs across the globe today. Great civilizations prosper when wealth is distributed fairly and all are equal. If you are interested in becoming part of a local working group to develop a Basic Income Guarantee (BIG), we'd love to hear from you.

Environmental Actor and Activity Map

The goal of this mapping project is to discover who is working in the Sault Ste. Marie area, and discern what goals and objectives these groups have for the community. This brief survey asks some general questions to collect information about who is actively engaged in these sectors and what they are doing.

Urban Forests Sustainability Plan

Trees and all the lifeforms that are included in a forest ecosystem are essential for human well-being and health. If you are interested in helping develop an urban Forestry Plan for Sault Ste. Marie, please get in touch.

The Social Innovation Hub

For the past decade, our youth have repeatedly called for an all-ages, substance-free space where they can hang out, hold events and access programs, and feel welcome.  The Sault's social impact sector is fragmented, undervalued, burdened by high rents, working in silos and lacking in sector-specific business supports. Collaborative co-working spaces and social innovation hubs are an emerging trend regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally. This project envisions our community coming together to support the creation of a sustainable and visionary hub of activity that cultivates collaboration, community transformation, and social innovation/entrepreneurship.

Community Climate Hub

The Crane Institute is working alongside the Climate Reality Project Canada to support the establishment of Community Climate Hubs in the Ontario region. Community climate hubs are citizen-driven groups in municipalities catalyzing climate change action. The Crane Institute is looking to help establish a Community Climate Hub for Sault Ste. Marie.

2019 Sustainable Budget

The Crane Institute has developed a recommendation paper for 2019 Sustainable Budget. In this paper, recommendations are provided to contribute towards a sustainable, healthy, and livable community.
